Rainforest-Alphonso Mango Trees
Alphonso Mango is considered one of the best African fruits. It is the most preferred fruit tree grown in Botswana and Tanzania. This hardy tree is native to Southern Africa. The name “Alphonso Mango” is given to the small golden fruit that has a tinge of golden yellow color. The fruit consists of round fleshy segments that are the size of a coin. This fruit tree is grown in dry, warm soil.
The mango trees produce small black seeds that are called melanoid seeds. These seeds are the determinant of whether a mango tree will grow successfully or not. The mango usually grows on a pole such as an old tree stump or a rocky area with steep sides. The trunk of a mature mango will have three to five pairs of branches that grow from a central trunk position.
The fruit is the end product of a mango tree. The fruit of mango contains two main components – curds and latex. The curds are the edible part of the mango. The latex is the non-edible core. Both these parts make up the mass of the mango.
Traditionally, the mango tree was trained to ripen the mango fruit on a banana leaf where the latex is extracted. This process is still used by the growers of the rain forest today, although this is not the only way they extract latex from the mango. Other methods include using banana leaf, banana stalks, or other fruits such as pineapples. All these ways extract the latex from the mango trees without damaging the tree.
Because the mango tree is a tropical tree, it must remain close to the equator in order to harvest its fruit on time due to the seasonal temperature swings. Because the mango grows fast, it can quickly take up to 30 years for one mango to mature. This is why the supply is limited and prices are high. It has taken nearly half a century to develop these mangoes to the point they can be shipped to South America and Asia. These countries have become the biggest market for mangoes.
The history of the Alphonso Mango Tree is fascinating. Through the ages, it has played a large part in the rainforests of the Amazon. It is unfortunate that it is one of the threatened species in the Amazon.
The primary source of the mango is the Latin name “Aquilaria Maritima”, which means literally, the rainforests of marigolds. They are found in a few scattered places in the Amazon, but they are so crucial to the rainforests that without them the Amazon would quickly become inhospitable to all but the strongest trees. Without the mango tree in the rainforests, the region would be inhospitable to all tropical plants. The rainforests are critical because they act as an incredibly important nursery and feeding ground for a number of different tropical fish species. Without the mango tree in the Amazon would lose most of its fish habitat.
The mango tree is a truly beautiful tree. While it does not grow as fast as some of the other larger tropical trees it does make an amazing tropical garden. Mango trees often grow up to thirty feet in height. The mango tree has many different species including the common mango, the acacia as well as the African mango.
